Advanced treatment for precancerous lesions

Photodynamic Therapy in Ann Arbor, MI

We can’t turn back the clock on sun damage—once we’ve exposed our skin to UV rays, the damage is done. We can, however, harness the power of another type of light to help treat and remove the most common forms of precancerous lesions: actinic keratoses. Also known as solar keratoses, these scaly spots carry a risk of progressing into squamous cell carcinoma if left untreated. But at Ganger Derm, we have the latest photodynamic therapy to stop them in their tracks.

How Photodynamic Therapy for Actinic Keratosis Works

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) works using an incredible chemical reaction between a light-sensitive medication and a specific wavelength of light. The medication, also called a photosensitizing drug, enters your bloodstream and is absorbed by the skin cells that make up the actinic keratoses. Then, when light is applied to the lesion, the drug activates, forming a unique oxygen molecule that destroys the lesion.

This therapy is ideal for actinic keratoses. It is also a particularly great option for people who have several lesions over a large area, using a method called field therapy. At Ganger Dermatology, we’ll take a comprehensive look at your skin to ensure that this is the best option for you and make sure you feel comfortable during all phases of the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Photodynamic Therapy FAQs

Photodynamic therapy typically involves no downtime, and patients are able to go home immediately following the procedure. Depending on the extent of the area treated, you may need to keep your bandage on and dry for 1 to 2 days. The treated area itself may take 2 to 6 weeks to completely heal. Your dermatologist will provide clear aftercare instructions to optimize your recovery!

Actinic keratoses are known as precancerous lesions because they have the possibility to turn into cancer. Not all actinic keratoses do turn into cancer, but because it is difficult to know for sure which will and which won’t, we recommend treating them as a precaution.

After treatment, the spot or spots treated may appear red and flaky and may peel (some patients compare it to a sunburn). This irritation can last from several days to two weeks, depending on the size of the area treated, but the skin will return to normal after healing. Your skin will also be more sensitive to light for at least 48 hours, so you should avoid all sunlight during that time.
